Valerie Scott’s Story: Lung Cancer, Not Just for Smokers

Valerie Scott is a non-smoker and she was diagnosed with phase 4 lung cancer. Scientists are saying radon could be the culprit.

Radon. A naturally-occurring gas that comes from the decay of uranium in soil and water. It seeps up through the ground and collects in buildings. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it so it’s impossible to know it’s there until you test for it.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates it kills at least 20,000 people every year. That makes it the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarettes — more dangerous than second-hand smoke. – Mike Headrick and Linda Williams. (KSL)

We have been touched by the honest story of a vibrant grandma longing to see her grandson grow up. We created glow-in-the-dark, leopard-printed wristbands and cancer bracelets that read “Lick it! Lung Cancer”, with hope that her family, friends and acquaintances will always be reminded of the battle Valerie is fighting.

We want to thank all our followers for the success of our new “Fifty Causes” Campaign! So far we have featured GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services) and Soles4Souls who seeks to provide shoes for every person in the world! Both causes were amazing and we are so excited for what is to come!

This coming Monday we will feature The Sheepfold. The Sheepfold is a refuge for domestically abused mothers and their children; not only are they a safe haven but they help these families become independent separate from their abusers. The Sheepfold “Fifty Causes” campaign will launch October 8th on causes.reminderband.com; don’t miss your chance to donate! Below is a video about domestic abuse brought to you by The Sheepfold.

On October 15th we will switch directions and feature The Adventure Project. An organization on a mission to create 10 million jobs in the next ten years.  Founded in 2010 by Becky Straw & Jody Landers, who met while traveling through Liberia, West Africa. They have joined forces to raise awareness and funds to support the world’s most-effective social ventures. Find their campaign starting October 15th on causes.reminderband.com. Below is a video describing how they plan give a stove to families in need this holiday season and through our campaign you can help!

We are also ecstatic to announce that on October 22nd we will be featuring the GimmeMo’ Foundation. Founded in 2009 by Disney Channel star Monique Coleman. Coleman was a Highschool Musical star but she knew there was more to come in her life. Below is the story of her mission to create something more.

We have created our Fifty Causes campaign to provide an easier way to give. See you soon!

It is common for college students to roll out of messy twin beds and groan about class and the Ramen noodles they will probably eat that night. Before we groan we should realize that one in four girls in developing nations never gets a chance to go to school. Here at the Reminderband offices we found this astonishing and wanted to help. She’s The First is a not-for-profit that sponsors girls’ education in the developing world, helping them be the first in their families to graduate. In the process, She’s the First fosters leadership and self-awareness in young Americans, by inspiring them to lead creative fundraisers and correspond with sponsored students. Their efforts shape a rising generation of well-educated global leaders, future philanthropists, and cross-cultural communicators.

We have sponsored She’s The First with custom wristbands to promote their Social Media Camp; TYWLS Explorers 2012. At camp they are teaching girls of NYC to use social media to spread awareness, build support and “be the first” at anything they desire! For more information about the charity visit http://www.shesthefirst.org/ .
