Colors and sizes: where to start

We get it. We’ve put you in a difficult position.

You’ve come to Reminderband to design something for your event but with so many awesome options, you’re at a crossroads. Don’t worry! We’re way ahead of it and we’ve already thought up some helpful resources so you can pin down your colors and sizes for your wristbands–whatever the occasion.

First up, let’s talk colors. If you are designing something for a cause, event, fundraiser, or awareness, and you’re just not quite sure what colors to go with, we’ve got a great reference point for you. Some causes and awareness movements have a commonly associated color, but some situations are less obvious. Our Color Guide gives a basic run-through of our traditional stock colors and the general moods and meaning of each color, to help you decide how to best convey your message.

So, you’ve nailed the color and look of your wristbands; stellar work! Now, what sizes to choose? That’ll depend on who will be wearing them. Our recommendation is that most folks up to about 190 lbs can fit comfortably in a Medium-sized wristband. Adult males or folks who want a bit more room on the wrist would probably be better served with a Large. Elementary school age kids can usually fit in a Small with no issues.

And YES, you CAN mix your sizes within your order at no extra cost!

If you want to get a better feel for exactly how big each size really is, you can use our sizing guide. This will allow you to cut out a strip and fit it around the wrist to determine the best sizes to order. You can view and download it here.

As always, let us know if you have questions. We’re here to help you succeed in making your design work. Happy band building!

Rubber vs. silicone wristbands

A Materials Showdown

Some people think that “rubber bracelets”* and “silicone bracelets” are the same — but the terms are not interchangeable. Rubber and silicone are very different and while the results may look similar in the form of the wristband, the two materials yield very different results in terms of flexibility, durability, and long-term wear.

Why silicone wristbands?

Silicone is stronger and longer-lasting than rubber, meaning that silicone bracelets are stronger and last longer than rubber wristbands or rubber bracelets of comparable size and thickness. Rubber bracelets wear out quickly and break much more easily. Silicone is also recyclable at certain recycling centers. At Reminderband, we make wristbands out of 100% industrial-strength polished silicone.

*not to be confused with rubber band bracelets, which are something else entirely.

What should I put on my memorial bracelet?

Popularly used at community vigils, family memorial services, or even just as personal reminders or tributes, memorial bracelets are a way to honor loved and lost ones for years to come. Inexpensive, durable, and customizable, silicone wristbands are often a popular token, especially when they can be ordered in bulk or in orders as small as one band.

This begs the question: what to put on the memorial band? There are a couple of factors to consider when designing or customizing a memorial bracelet. One is its intended use: is it a gift for those attending a funeral, or intended to rally a community around a cause, or serve as an individual, personal reminder? Another is visibility. People often ask questions about silicone awareness bracelets — how much are you willing to or wanting to share? If you don’t want to talk about it, a less vibrant color and design might be better suited to your purpose. Finally, the bracelet should serve as a reminder of the cause and/or person and honor them. Use words, phrases, colors, or artwork that represent them.

Examples of things people have put on Reminderband memorial bracelets in the past include:

  • A memorial or religious phrase
  • Names
  • A hashtag or URL for more information
  • Dates
  • Symbols or artwork to represent a cause or a person who passed away

A tattoo alternative: wristbands

silicone wristbands

“I use these bands to remind me of what is very important to me. Mostly, it’s important lessons learned that I want to be reminded of daily, but not something I would want tattooed on me. Reminderband’s slogan should be: ‘Because tattoos are too permanent.’”

Ryan from Houston, TX
Tattoos are becoming a popular way to memorialize a loved one, encapsulate life lessons, practice self-expression, or deliver a daily personal reminder. Interest in wrist tattoos is especially growing — Google queries for “wrist tattoos” or “wrist tattoo” doubled in the past five years. But instead of inking oneself with something that is unchangeable and must be hidden in many professional settings, why not consider a wristband instead?
Wristbands can feature words and art in a unique creation. Long-lasting, high-quality silicone means wristbands can be worn for years (even swimming, in the shower, etc) but they can also be removed if needs be. Wristbands or awareness bracelets are also acceptable in the business environment: Most school, workplace, and religious dress codes don’t mind a wristband but may ban visible tattoos. Alternately, if you have a wrist tattoo you’re trying to cover up, wristbands (especially extra-wide phat bands!) can help with that, too.
If you’re still considering a tattoo, especially a wrist tattoo, why not try it out in wristband format first and see if you get tired of the images or message? You can also change it up for variety’s sake, share and swap with friends, or tweak if you find a better or more effective design.
Choose from several wristband styles, 30 colors, or add your own custom color, font, or artwork with our wristband design tool to create your own daily reminder, no needles required.

Silicone wristbands track chemical exposure

Researchers at Oregon State University are using silicone wristbands to track chemical exposure.

In a paper entitled “Silicone Wristbands as Personal Passive Samplers” published in Environmental Science and Technology, Kim A. Anderson and colleagues used silicone wristbands to identify exposure to a variety of chemicals.

Capturing and tracking chemical exposure is important to understanding the risk factors for certain diseases and conditions, but it’s difficult to measure.

“People are constantly exposed to all sorts of low level pollutants, from industrial compounds used in disinfectants and upholstery, to fragrances and nicotine in consumer products to pesticides. Research suggests there is a link between some of these chemicals and health problems, but long-term measurements to confirm that are difficult to make,” says Voice of America.

Researchers got the idea to use silicone wristbands after seeing the bracelets at an OSU football game.

While silicone doesn’t absorb water, it does act like a sponge in that it absorbs chemicals. After running tests on the wristbands, which participants wore continuously for 30 days, researchers were able to identify exposure to 49 compounds. It’s possible to screen for more than 1,000.

Backpacks are still most effective, but wristbands are helpful for getting data because they’re easy to wear. The researchers said it could be used in remote regions or for pregnant women.

“Silicone personal samplers present an innovative sampling technology platform producing relevant, quantifiable data,” the report said. “…Studies utilizing this sampler are currently underway, and we hope this easy-to-wear and dynamic application of silicone may become a valuable tool to address challenges of the exposome and mixture toxicity.”

Another group of researchers said they would use the bands soon for a project.

“Julie Herbstman, an epidemiologist at Columbia University, says the backpack monitors are still the gold standard for personal exposure monitoring, in particular because they can track particulate matter, which the silicone bands would miss,” reported Chemical and Engineering News. “But the advantage of a wristband is that it’s so unobtrusive that the wearers “sort of forget about it.” Herbstman is now working with Anderson’s team to test the bands with pregnant women to track their exposure to PAHs and to compare the performance of wristbands with backpack monitors.”

Oklahoma Tornado Destroys School

Our team has heard many heart-wrenching stories over the years and our wristbands have represented those tales, memories and people. The tornado that devastated Moore Oklahoma shattered an elementary school’s front glass window tore off the roof and the walls were punched in. A car laid flipped inside the main hallway.

The storm caused as much as $2 billion in damage, and it damaged or destroyed 1,200 homes in Moore and Oklahoma City, affecting about 33,000 people, the authorities said Thursday.

We want to remember and honor the victims of the tornadoes deadly path and their families.
