Mother Son Duo Fight Cancer - Nikko.jpg

A mother and son, both battling cancer, recently used Reminderband keychains to boost morale and show appreciation for their support team.

Kristen Worthington and her 14-year-old son, Nikko, were both diagnosed with cancer in 2017, just four months apart. Kristen has stage 2a Breast Cancer and Nikko has stage 4, level 4 high-risk Rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare and extremely aggressive childhood cancer.

Kristen and Nikko do their best to help each other stay positive and strong and find beauty in the people around them who are helping them on their journey.

They are using keychains they created through Reminderband as small tokens of appreciation to all those supporting them and to help them during their battles.

Screen Shot 2018-09-06 at 1.35.28 PM.pngMany of the nurses caring for Kristen and Nikko wear the keychains on their ID badges or have them hanging at their desks.

In Kristen’s words:

“Nikko and I are continuing to work on healing… in many ways. We are trying to get stronger and are spending time finding a new ‘normal.’

“A difficult diagnosis of any kind, not just cancer, damages your soul as well as your body. Hearing all the difficult statistics, side effects and prognosis, knowing what tasks you have to go through daily or watching your loved one suffer… hoping for a reprieve of some kind —even a small one. The trauma you experience tears holes in your heart and soul.

“One of the ways we healed is by looking to the kindness that surrounded us: the compassion of the nurses and doctors and staff at the hospital, the compassion of family and friends, the compassion of complete strangers.

“Now that we have completed treatment, we are still working on helping our bodies heal. We are also still trying to help the deep wounds in our souls to heal.

“For two weeks in July, thanks to some very kind people, we were able to go a long way to healing our souls.   At Nikko’s request, we [our family] took a road trip around six western states. And it was magical and healing and beautiful in so many ways; from seeing fireworks over San Francisco Bay on the 4th, to Monterey, LA, Disneyland, and Vegas. So many new experiences, smiles, hugs, walks down memory lane, laughter, happy tears, and more hugs.

“We are beyond thankful, not only for the opportunity but also for our improved health that allowed us to go and be free from care for a couple weeks.
We will treasure the memories for a lifetime.”

About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetimes, making breast cancer one of the most common cancers in the United States. More than 200,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Breast cancer used to carry a stigma and was generally viewed as a very private disease. With the campaign to bring breast cancer into the open for increased awareness and to encourage women to get tested, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has taken off. Millions of people now participate in breast cancer awareness events worldwide.

Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG campaign brought about the widespread use of the rubber wristband as an awareness and fundraising tool for cancer victims and researchers. Today, the cancer wristband or “cancer bracelet” is used by educators, survivors, advocates, family members, researchers, and community organizers to indicate support, spread awareness, or raise funds. With the takeoff of breast cancer-related events, breast cancer awareness bracelets have also become a key part of the fight.

At Reminderband, we’ve added a selection of predesigned breast cancer awareness bracelets in the hopes that they inspire further creativity in your efforts to advocate, support, and inspire. View these breast cancer awareness bracelets and others or further customize and design your own at reminderband.com.
